The workshop is an Arkansas Department of Education-approved workshop designed to help teachers develop a “Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)” policy for their school district. The policy would utilize mobile devices in the middle and secondary classrooms so that they become a resource rather than a distraction.

The workshop will be held May 30 and June 15 in Mashburn Hall, Room 234, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is open to all Arkansas educators.  The workshop is free. Space is limited. To register, go to bit.ly/byotuca.  Contact Dr. Michael S. Mills at mmills@uca.edu for more information.

CONWAY — Dr. Joseph Anderson, the former chair of the Department of Mass Communication and Theatre, was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus during commencement Saturday at the University of Central Arkansas.

“I spent many years in the university because I wanted to be where learning and thinking were practiced and highly valued,” Anderson said. “Sometimes I was able to share my enthusiasm for the pursuit of knowledge with like-minded colleagues and students. Those were my best moments, along with this one.”

Anderson is credited with helping to transform the Department of Mass Communication and Theatre. An Arkansas native, he joined UCA in July 2002 from Georgia State University and served seven years as the department chair before his retirement in 2009.

New Study Examines Economic Impact of Increased Severance Tax Rate

CONWAY, ARK (May 11, 2012) – Increasing the severance tax on natural gas production in Arkansas would lead to significant economic losses including 8,322 permanent jobs, $2.7 billion in total spending, and $960 million in gross product, according to a study released today by the Conway Chamber of Commerce. The study indicates the proposed increase to a flat rate of 7 percent – with no incentives for new wells or high-cost drilling – is likely to reduce well completion and production by 8.5 percent, and will compel companies to shift production to areas with lower tax rates.
