Finding college scholarships in light of tuition increases

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- The Fiscal Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees for the University of Arkansas met Tuesday.

The group reviewed proposed tuition and fee rates for the 2013-2014 school year, and any increases exceeding 3.5 percent will appear before the committee. U of A is not the only institution dealing with higher costs; students across the nation are dealing with college tuition getting more expensive.

Most families turn to scholarships to help with paying for higher education, yet they still feel the pinch when it comes to costs. So what options are available for these families?

"We've got some great financial aid programs in place and yet students still seem to have some needs," said Dr. Dean Kahler, the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management at UALR.

He added that it's never too late to start saving.

102 years after death, fallen deputy honored for sacrifice

CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) -- All this week, law enforcement agencies around Arkansas are remembering fallen comrades apart of this year's National Police Week.

So far this year, four officers have been killed while on duty in Arkansas. That puts us second in the nation behind California.

"We have to be diligent everyday to utilize training in dealing with these kinds of people," explained Pulaski County Sheriff Doc Halladay as he spoke about the increase on attacks on officers.

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office added the name of Chief Deputy Barney Stiel to their memorial Tuesday. Stiel was killed in the line of duty in 1911, and research efforts helped recognize his sacrifice to his community.

A memorial will be held Wednesday in Faulkner County for two fallen officers---William McGary, of the Conway Police Department and Deputy Hans Fifer, of the Faulkner County Sheriff's Office.

Education, patrols mark Bike Month

Education, patrols mark Bike Month

Conway, AR – Bicycles have the same rights to the roadways of Conway as motor vehicles. But riders have to observe the same rules of the road as motor vehicles; all traffic laws are applicable to bicycles.

Enforcing traffic laws whether for vehicles or bikers is something CPD takes very seriously on a daily basis.  During the week of May 12-18, as Conway Advocates for Bicycling celebrate National Bike Month, CPD will step up efforts to enforce traffic laws with an emphasis on bike laws.  Violators of the laws could be ticketed.  In 2012 the CPD dealt with several crashes involving bikers.
