UCA to host Genocide Commemoration Program | Events
CONWAY – The University of Central Arkansas will host a Genocide Commemoration Program on April 15. April marks the 18th anniversary of the genocide that took place in Rwanda, which resulted in the brutal murder of almost one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
UCA is a member of the college and university consortium that hosts Rwandan Presidential Scholars. Six amazing young men have put together a program that focuses on the reconciliation and forgiveness campaign that has been central to rebuilding Rwanda. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m. in the College of Business.
"Every April, Rwanda has a period of remembrance for the massive genocide that occurred in 1994. We had an event last year, and it was packed, so we needed to get a bigger venue this year,” said Leah Horton, resident master for the STEM Residential College.
A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the Genocide Commemoration Program to help raise money for students who will be teaching science in several primary schools in Rwanda and for science kits that will be given to schools. Doors will open for bidding at 5 p.m.
UCA is conducting its first faculty-led study abroad to Rwanda in May. "Science and Society in Rwanda" is a program that is investigating the intersection of science and society during the genocide and recovery of Rwanda. The Rwanda trip is in conjunction with Bridge to Rwanda.
