Escaped monkey plays with cat, throws pencils before captured

CONWAY, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas veterinary clinic says a 30-pound pet monkey busted out of his steel cage and played with a large orange housecat before he was coaxed back into confinement by a police officer.

An alarm was triggered Tuesday when Joey, a Macaque, broke out of the Chestnut Animal Clinic in Conway. Clinic practice manager Zach Shaddox says Joey was apparently disturbed by the loud alarm and threw some pens and pencils around the office.

Joey also played with the clinic's cat that was lounging on the front counter before heading outside. Shaddox tells the Log Cabin Democrat that Joey climbed onto the shoulder of a police officer who was the same build as his owner.

Truck overturns near El Paso Monday, spills sludge into ditch

FAULKNER COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - A truck overturned near El Paso on Monday.

Public information officer Bill Sadler said the truck, which was carrying an unknown amount of oil-based cutting mud, overturned on Highway 5 north of El Paso around 7:30 p.m. He added that a small amount of diesel from the truck fuel tank also spilled across the highway.

Sadler said Charles McCoy, of Malvern, lost control of the vehicle just prior to the crash, and sludge spilled into the ditch where the truck turned over. Whether or not McCoy was injured in the accident is unknown.

Clean-up operations were coordinated by the White County OES representative, Tamara Jenkins, and the truck is operated by Minute Man Environmental Services based in Milton, Penn.

The Office of Emergency Management said that the truck was not carrying material from the cleanup at Mayflower.

List of blood drives in Central Ark. this summer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (American Red Cross) - While Independence Day will surely ignite many fireworks extravaganzas, the American Red Cross is counting on volunteer donors to spark the nation's blood supply. The need for blood is constant, especially around the summer holidays, when eligible donors have even less time in their busy schedules to give.

As part of the Red Cross Summer of Stories campaign to increase donations when they historically drop, all presenting donors between July 1 and 15 could win one of five $3,000 American Express gift cards.
