Faulkner Co. drunk driving victim awaiting surgery | News
CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - Family members of a Faulkner County man struck by a drunk driver over the weekend are speaking out and giving Today's THV the latest on the 48-year old victim.
Alan Shirley was actually at UAMS initially after the incident. But on Monday afternoon, his family says that Shirley was taken to Baptist Hospital so he could have a specialist for surgery on his pelvis Tuesday. The family that we talked to say Shirley is expected to make a recovery but not a speedy one.
"It's hard, I kind of miss him, my kids miss him," Kyla Shirley said.
Kyla Shirley is still absorbing a big scare over the weekend. Authorities say that her uncle Alan Shirley was hit by a drunk driver, while walking Saturday morning near home.
"A witness told us that he tried to move out of the way twice, I guess he just wasn't quick enough," Kyla Shirley said.
The Faulkner County Sheriff's office says that Damon Warbritton of Vilonia was the driver of the truck that hit Shirley near Highway 36 and Roden Mill Road.
"He had a dislocated knee on his left side and in his pelvic bones, all on his left side, he had a ruptured spleen and he had a few fractured ribs on his back," Kyla Shirley said.
The driver hit Shirley's home too, ramming into this now boarded-up area.
"It makes me so angry because I don't think that even if you're going to drink and drive you know, people don't deserve your actions because there's no reason why this should have ever happened," Kyla Shirley said.
In the incident report, Warbritton admitted that he was intoxicated and hit Shirley and his house while driving home from a party in Conway. Warbritton also said to deputies that he "thought he had sobered up enough to drive home." But his blood alcohol content .157, nearly double the legal limit.
"I'm devastated, I am just sick," Tanya Shirley said.
Sister-in-law Tanya Shirley doesn't expect a quick recovery. But she and her daughter say that Shirley will pull through.
"He's got a strong will, he's just like his mother and he's got a strong family behind him," Tanya Shirley said.
Family members say, despite everything, Shirley is in good spirits and talking. He's even developed a strong appetite.
We did try to get a comment from the suspect in this case but he wasn't home when we dropped by his listed address in the sheriff's report.
We also left a voicemail on his number listed in the report and haven't heard back either. Authorities say that Warbritton posted bond on Sunday. He's facing DWI and reckless driving charges.
