CONWAY — Heather E. Hinesley from Conway and Jared M. Cronk from Cabot, both Sophomore Music Education majors from UCA, have been chosen to participate in Drum Corps International (DCI) for the summer of 2013.

Musicians chosen for the annual tour spend several weeks in May living and rehearsing in Indianapolis, Indiana before beginning a summer tour schedule with their individual corps assignments. The musicians visit and perform in several states throughout the summer, living either on the tour bus or in school gymnasiums. This tour begins the end of May and wraps up August 11, following the National DCI Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. at the Lucas Oil Stadium on August 10.  To participate requires skill, a passion for the activity, and a big time commitment.  Each participant signs a contract that they will honor this commitment.

Both Hinesley and Cronk auditioned and were then chosen to participate in the Corp Color Guard.

CONWAY — Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of novels and short stories, will be at the University of Central Arkansas as artist in residence Feb. 26-27.

Garry Craig Powell, associate professor of writing and the faculty sponsor for the residency, called Egan a “true A-list author” whom the students at UCA would greatly benefit from hearing.

“Her visit will also help establish the reputation of UCA’s Creative Writing program,” Powell said.

In the future, he predicted, Egan’s work will be considered among the classics.

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, Egan will give a public reading and book signing beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the College of Business Auditorium, room 107. On Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m., she will give a creative writing craft talk and Q&A in Thompson Hall 331. All events of the residency are free and open to the public.

Conway Got a Homeless Shelter in Our Stocking

Conway Got a Homeless Shelter in Our Stocking

Christmas came early for Bethlehem House! The day that has been prayed for, dreamed of, worked toward and greatly anticipated came to pass recently.

On Wednesday, December 5, the Campaign Goal for Conway’s new homeless shelter was reached. The celebration started that night even before the Christian Concert featuring Josh Wilson began. Bethlehem House Executive Director Judi Lively was joined on stage at Woodlawn Heights Baptist Church by Johnny and Stacia Adams, who chaired the Capital Campaign Committee. Adams began by thanking those who worked on the Capital Campaign Committee and those who generously donated to the Campaign.

Adams made special mention of, “Conway Corporation for a great gift that kicked the campaign off.” Adams expressed his appreciation saying, “We couldn’t have done it without you.”
